Winter Star Retreat is a rustic cabin located high in the Black Mountain Range of western North Carolina. The cabin offers a unique, relaxing experience for our guests.
Location:
Winter Star Retreat is located on Winter Star Creek in the Cattail Community of Yancey County. We are less than an hour from Asheville NC and about 20 minutes from Burnsville, the county seat of Yancey County. The cabin is at 4200 feet elevation on the west side of the Black Mountain Range, the tallest mountain range east of the Mississippi. It is nestled beside a fast flowing creek that splashes over boulders and through rock pools surrounded by rhododendrons. The cabin is set in a lovely hardwood forest just outside the Pisgah National Forest. The setting is very private and quiet. The only noises you’ll hear are the birds and the creek- which will lull you to sleep each evening!
The cabin is accessed via a recently upgraded gravel road which will accommodate most vehicles. Sports cars or other vehicles with exceptionally low ground clearance are not recommended.
Accommodations
Winter Star Retreat provides lodging for up to six adults (no children under 12 please). The master suite has a queen size bed and adjoining full bath with shower. Two additional bedrooms are upstairs. One has a queen size bed the other has two twin beds. A second full bath with tub/shower is provided. The cabin features a full kitchen with range, fridge, microwave, and dishwasher. The Great Room features a wood stove and easy access to the partially covered deck. Central heat and air conditioning are provided although at this high elevation you will probably want to open the windows and enjoy the cool breezes and beautiful sound of Winter Star Creek.
NOTE: Winter Star Retreat is an older rustic cabin. The ceilings on the first floor are only 6 feet 5 inches high- so if you are over 6 foot 4 this may not be the place for you!
At our remote location we do not have TV reception nor do we have cable or satellite. A video monitor and DVD/VCR player are provided so bring your favorite movies! Local phone service is provided. Long distance calls may be made with your telephone credit card.
